Happy Book Birthday! Bone Flower Queen Release Day

Posted on:

BFQ Cover Mock 50 percentSo today is the official release day for the paperback version of The Bone Flower Queen. Right now it’s only available at Amazon, but it is available for pre-order in e-book format at many online vendors (visit the book’s page here to find links to your favorite ebook retailer). The ebook version’s street date is January 5th, so a little under a month from now.

In the meantime, you can read the first chapter here.

Suddenly the ground rumbled and I looked around, my calm forgotten. Was it an earthquake? Behind me, the maguey plant’s thick, fleshy leaves waved as if caught in a great wind, yet none of the plants around it moved, and no wind was blowing. The rumbling focused between me and the maguey plant, as if something large and sinister burrowed towards me….

Having defeated the sorcerer god Smoking Mirror and reclaimed her throne, Quetzalpetlatl and her brother Topiltzin set out to found Quetzalcoatl’s new holy city and end human sacrifice throughout the Toltec world.

But Smoking Mirror hasn’t abandoned his own ambitions for power; with his allies–both mortal and divine–threatening war among the gods, he’s shifted his focus to Quetzalpetlatl and her budding magical powers. Along with her deep, personal connection to his hated enemy Quetzalcoatl, she would be the perfect addition to his ranks, if only he could convince her that she’s working for the wrong side in this conflict.

And he knows the one secret that will tear apart everything she thinks she knows about her beloved god…and herself.

By turns exhilarating, heartbreaking and always richly detailed both in character and world building, this tapestry of love, loss and war is a worthy sequel to The Bone Flower Throne. — Aliette de Bodard, Nebula Award winning author of the Obsidian and Blood trilogy

Morganfield once again takes us on a fascinating journey through Mesoamerican mythology, following Quetzlpetalatl as she discovers that her world is not what she thought it was…and neither is she. — J. Kathleen Cheney, author of The Golden City series

Bone Flower Update

Posted on:

BFT_ebookcovI’ve finished republishing Bone Flower Throne to all digital markets. The paperback is available as well, but currently only at Amazon. Hopefully it will trickle out to BN in the next week or two. Many of the Panverse digital editions are still available for sale, and you should feel free to buy either one (I make a royalty regardless), but folks should know that the new edition includes some color interior art that are quite beautiful on the tablets. However, the larger file size does make it run slower on older devices, like the 2nd gen Kindles. I am looking into ways to decrease the file’s size and will update it if and when I do, but for now, those with older devices might want to grab up the Panverse edition while it’s still available (it’s not available on Kindle anymore). Visit the novel’s page for quick links to everywhere you can buy.

BFQ Cover Mock 50 percentAs for Bone Flower Queen, I intend to do the final read-through and copyedit on that next week and have the paper version available on Amazon by mid-month. Digital versions will be available on or after January 5th (BN is closed from Jan 1-4, so there might be a backlog on the 5th, though I intend to have the final version submitted before Christmas). In the meantime, you can pre-order the ebook versions at Amazon, Kobo, Apple, and BN, and they will be automatically delivered to your device on release day. Thank you everyone who has already pre-ordered! Also, if you purchase a paperback edition through Amazon, you get a free digital copy when they become available!

In the meantime, it’s high time I get back to work on the final book in the trilogy. I have a little over 15k already written, and my hope is to have that one out much sooner than a year from now.

Bone Flower Queen Available for Pre-Order

BFQ Cover Mock 50 percentI’ve put the Kindle edition of The Bone Flower Queen up for pre-order on Amazon (and am looking into doing the same on Kobo as well). So you can order your copy now and it will be delivered directly to your Kindle on January 5th, the e-book’s official release date. I’ve also activated Kindle Match Book on it, so if you purchase the paperback version via Amazon, you can download the e-book for free. I am planning to have the paperback version on sale by mid to late December, for those who like dead-tree editions.

I’ve also moved forward with widening the distribution for my short story collection Night Bird Soaring and Other Stories. As of this posting, it’s available at Amazon, B&N, and Apple IBooks, but should also be up on Kobo within a day from now. Go here for direct links to purchase. Only $2.99 for over 300 pages of short fiction!Vertical background with Maya calendar and Earth

Bone Flower Queen also has listings on Goodreads, Booklikes, and LibraryThing. And starting tomorrow (the 13th), I’m running an e-ARC giveaway on Booklikes. I do have plans to also run a paperback giveaway on Goodreads once my ARCs arrive from CreateSpace.

And in case you don’t already know, Panverse will be offering The Bone Flower Throne for free for 48 hours coming up really soon, so stay tuned! (In fact, they are running free promos throughout November, so make sure you drop by every 48 hours to download your free e-book!)

Bone Flower Queen Cover Reveal

I’m pleased to finally reveal the cover for the second novel of the Bone Flower Trilogy.

BFQ Cover Mock 50 percent

Very beautiful work by World Fantasy Award nominated artist Zelda Devon (who also did the first book’s cover). I love how this cover continues the stone imagery theme from the first book’s cover. I couldn’t be more pleased.

More news coming very soon!

Bone Flower Queen: Moving Forward

Posted on:

Full logo whiteMuch has changed on the publishing end of things since the last update. I can now announce that The Bone Flower Queen should be out in January of next year, early February at the latest. But I will publish the book on my own, under my self-publishing press Feathered Serpent Books (under which I’d already published Night Bird Soaring and Other Stories a few years back). I’m not going to go into details about why, but I’m pleased to say that my editor is still working with me on the book in a freelance capacity, so readers can expect the same good, clean copy they found in Bone Flower Throne. I’ve also brought Zelda Devon back to create another beautiful cover, and I’m really excited to see what she comes up with. There will be print copies available the same as with BFT, done through POD, and of course kindle and epub editions. I’m not sure yet whether I’m going to make the book available through Smashwords or Apple yet–neither of which were ever producers of high sales for BFT; broader distribution is still something I’m investigating and will come to a decision about in the next couple of months.

The news that I’d have to go it on my own was a bit scary at first, and if I had faced this same decision with BFT, I probably wouldn’t have had to the guts to pursue it. But seeing positive reader reaction and support for the first book in this trilogy made the decision a bit easier and not so intimidating. As part of the deal, I also get back all my rights to Bone Flower Throne at the end of the year, so I’ll be re-releasing that under the FSB’s banner around the same time Bone Flower Queen debuts (and maybe doing some temporary price drops on it to push sales for BFQ). I’m also looking forward to learning the technical side; yes, I did self-publish NBS several years ago, but it feels very different doing a completely new, original work rather than reprinted material.

Want to help support my move to self publishing? There are several ways you can. I’ve added Bone Flower Queen to Goodreads, so you can add it to your library, and speaking of libraries, you can ask your local library to order a paper copy of Bone Flower Throne for their collection. I’m also currently looking to assemble a street team of readers who would be interested in reading advanced review copies (electronic only) in exchange for posting an honest review on Goodreads, Amazon, B&N, Booklikes, LibraryThing, or on their blog. If you’re interested, you can message me over on Facebook, or use the contact page here to let me know. Make sure you include your preferred email address and electronic format (mobi, epub, .doc, or .pdf). ARCs will begin going out in early November. And it’s always helpful to spread the word about Bone Flower Throne; tell your friends or facebook followers about it–anyone you think would be interested in diverse epic fantasy with a strong female protagonist. Word-of-mouth can really help lift little-known books out of obscurity.
