Night Bird Soaring at Escape Pod
The podcast of my Sidewise Award nominated short story “Night Bird Soaring” is now up at Escape Pod. It’s narrated by Mat Weller, who’s a brave soul to take on those tongue-twisting Nahuatl pronunciations; I haven’t had a chance yet to sit down and listen to it, but we did spend some time on the phone going over the pronunciations earlier this week, so any mispronunciations are likely due to my own mispronouncing these words. The full text of the story is available to read there as well.

Year’s Best Science Fiction – Honorable Mention
The esteemed Doug Cohen at Realms of Fantasy just informed me that my short story “The Hearts of Men” garnered a honorable mention in the latest Year’s Best Science Fiction, edited by Gardner Dozois. Very exciting!
Good friend Aliette de Bodard also wracked up quite a few honorable mentions and had a story included in the anthology, but I was thrilled to see my favorite of her stories last year, “Desaparecidos”, was among the honorable mentions. Congrats to her on another stellar year!

Space and Time #114

Surprises came in the mailbox today: contributors copies for Space and Time #114. As mentioned earlier this year, a formatting error resulted in large chunks of my story “The Jade Bones” not being printed (I blame my propensity for using italics heavily), but now the corrected, full-version has been reprinted in issue #114. So if you read the story in issue #113 and found yourself confused, I hope you’ll take the opportunity to give it a second look in the newest issue. The issue also includes stories by Larry Hodges, Scott H. Andrews, and Josepha Sherman.

Space and Time #113 – Notice to Readers
Issue 113 of Space and Time, containing my retelling of an Aztec creation myth, is now available in both paper and e-pub. I did want to give readers a heads-up that the print version is incomplete due to a formatting error and the story will be reprinted in full in the next issue. However, the pdf version has been corrected, and according to S&T’s website, anyone who has a paper subscription can get a free pdf version, you just need to contact the editor about it.
I do want to say that editor Hildy Silverman has dealt with the error both swiftly and professionally, and I’m very pleased with how she’s handled the situation. This hasn’t in any way changed my mind about Space and Time being a market I will submit to in the future.

The Jade Bones in Space and Time
Received word a couple weeks ago that my story “The Jade Bones” will be appearing in the next issue of Space and Time, due out in January. Here’s a teaser for you:
When the last humans are killed at the end of the Fourth Age, the young wind god Ehecatl wants to be the father of the next generation of humanity. But to do that, he must go down into the underworld and walk the treacherous path into Mictlan as a human being and convince Lord Death to surrender the bones of humanity to him. If he doesn’t complete his task in time, the mists of Mictlan will claim him forever.
